Boost & Bury

Category Merchandiser offers some lightweight automation to reduce the manual merchandising required.

By default, these rules will not affect pinned products. Any products that are pinned will be shown at the top of the category, above any boosted sale items, and any out-of-stock pinned products will not be buried.

Merchandising options


Bury out-of-stock products

Out-of-stock products are moved to the end of the category. A product is considered out of stock when:

  • Inventory is tracked at the product level, and the product inventory level is 0, OR
  • Inventory is tracked at the variant level, and all purchasable variants have a stock of 0, OR
  • The product availability is marked as not available for purchase.

Boost on sale products

Move on-sale products to the beginning/top of the category. A product is considered to be on sale when all variants are discounted.

We do not boost products where only some of the variants are discounted, as there's no indication on the category page that these products are discounted. BigCommerce only shows the discount messaging when all variants are discounted.

Show available and in stock before pre-orders

Pre-order products are purchasable but technically do not have stock. Use this option if you wish to ensure products with stock are shown before pre-orders.

A side effect of this option is that out of stock products will be buried beneath in stock products as well.

Allow unpinned products to be buried

By default, merchandising will only affect products that are not pinned in the visual merchandiser.

Choose this option if you wish for pinned products to be buried when "Bury out of stock products" is enabled.
